Highlight your thesis statement. Does it match the prompt? Does it address whether or not Of Mice and Men is an example of good literature? Does it give a reason why? Is it a complex sentence (has a subordinate clause)? Is it precise, succint, and sophisticated?
Highlight the topic sentences in your body paragraphs. Do they showcase your own ideas and writing technique (your own words)? Does each one support your thesis statement?
Example: In his 1962 Nobel Prize Acceptance speech, John Steinbeck explains that quality literature helps readers to better understand their world. One character in the novel that allows readers to develop a deeper understanding of the human heart is ...... Another character in the novel that gives insight into other viewpoints is .....
Underline your text evidence sentences. Do they have quotes embedded? Did you use signal phrases? Did you choose the best text evidence to clearly demonstrate your point? Do you have at least one in each body paragraph?
Bracket [ ] your commentary/explanation sentences. Did you provide thorough explanation of the significance or meaning of each piece of text evidence? With your commentary, did you tightly connect all text evidence to your point of each paragraph and your overall thesis statement?
